Town Clerk

New Hampshire citizens have been served by clerks since the early towns were established in the Province of New Hampshire. Before 1699, clerks were appointed by the judiciary in the New England Dominion. In the nineteenth century towns began to choose clerks by ballot.

As the Office of the Clerk has evolved, it has been assigned many of the duties which it has today. Clerks have the responsibility for recording marriages, births and deaths. Performing motor vehicle registrations, and the general responsibilities of the town clerk in the motor vehicle registration process, constitute a major part of a town clerk's day. In addition to collecting town permit fees, the town clerk also acts as a municipal agent for the State of New Hampshire issuing plates and processing titles.

All dogs, in the town, must also be registered by the town clerk. It is a law in the state of New Hampshire that each dog, over four months old, must be registered by its owner prior to April 30th of each year. The town clerk is required, by law, to keep up-to-date records and issue tags .Dog licenses are due and payable by April 30, 2024. Proof of rabies vaccination is required.

It is important to note that the duties of the clerk are assigned by the legislature, and not by the Selectmen. The clerk is an elected position clearly outlined by the State of New Hampshire.
